Enhancements to Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program

The government of Alberta has announced a number of enhancements to the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP), a collaboration with the federal government that permits the province a method to select its own candidates for permanent resident status. Alberta is one of numerous provinces that offer such programs at this time, which are intended to target immediate job market needs that federal programs may not.

Effective January 02 2018, the AINP will introduce the Alberta Opportunity Stream, which will encompass all of the Skilled Worker, International Graduate, and Semi-Skilled Worker employer-driven streams. By consolidating the programs into one category, the intention is to make the program more easily understandable for candidates and Alberta employers.

Other changes, which are intended to reduce processing times for AINP applications are:

1. The need for a formal language test score, which may include the IELTS or CELPIP.
2. The need for a formal Education Credential Assessment to attest to education qualifications.
3. The government expects to apply quotas to limit the intake of applications based on a fixed number. At present, anyone can submit and enter into a backlog that could range from 6 months to 48 months by the government’s estimates.
4. Applications will be Expressions of Interest and a formal application can only follow an invitation to apply.

The AINP will also introduce an Express Entry Stream, which will allow the government to select from the federal Express Entry pool, even if the candidate has not applied specifically in the AINP.
